How to figure out what lights you up

Increase engagement at work

Do you spend most of your day engaged and fulfilled by what you're doing? If not, here's an exercise I love called the "Good Time Journal" from Designing Your Life to help you better understand what lights you up.

First, start a daily activity log. As you list every activity you do throughout out your day, add a column to reflect how Engaged and also how Energized you are by each (see the Good Time Journal printout for an easy template!) Feel free to add notes and reflections about why: Was it the type of activity? The environment or other people involved? Did you feel like you were using your strengths or contributing to something?

The idea from the authors is to "catch yourself" in the act of having a good time to help you start to better understand the activities and tasks that motivate and energize you. Once you've spent some time logging, take a step back and reflect on some of the themes that came up. How can you use this information to make small (or big!) changes to your daily routine or priorities? The type of work you ask for or choose to take on? The career direction you ultimately move toward?
